Housing Crisis in Iraqi Governorates Determining the Housing Need in the Country
New Study on the Housing Crisis in Iraq The East Gate for Sustainable Development has issued a new study entitled: "The Housing Crisis in Iraq and Determining the Housing Need in the Iraqi Governorates", which sheds light on one of the most complex challenges facing Iraq today. Study Summary: Iraq has been witnessing high population growth at a rate of about 3% annually since 1961 until 2022, which has led to a six-fold increase in the population during that period. This growth, along with heavy migration from the countryside to the cities due to the lack of rural services and the availability of jobs in the cities, has raised the percentage of the urban population from 44.4% in 1961 to 71.6% in 2023. In addition, the internal displacement movement resulting from civil conflicts and the activity of terrorist groups has increased the pressure on urban areas, as many residents have left their villages due to weak security control, preferring to reside in safer cities. Housing Crisis: Despite this large population increase, the increase in the number of housing units did not keep pace with this growth, as estimates indicate a deficit in housing units of up to 2 million housing units in 2016, with a clear absence of effective programs to meet this demand. Study objectives: - Highlighting the most important indicators of the housing deficit in the governorates of Iraq. - Reviewing the main factors that caused the housing crisis to worsen. - Providing comprehensive and implementable solutions to address this urgent problem. Study importance: It provides a comprehensive vision for decision-makers and specialists to understand the dimensions of the housing crisis in Iraq, and to find sustainable visions and solutions that serve Iraqi society and contribute to improving the housing situation of millions of Iraqi families.
