New Study on the Housing Crisis in Iraq The East Gate for Sustainable Development has issued a new study entitled: "The Housing Crisis in Iraq and Determining the Housing Need in the Iraqi Governorates", which sheds light on one of the most complex challenges facing Iraq today. Study Summary: Iraq has been witnessing high population growth at a rate of about 3% annually since 1961 until 2022, which has led to a six-fold increase in the population during that period. This growth, along with heavy migration from the countryside to the cities due to the lack of rural services and the availability of jobs in the cities, has raised the percentage of the urban population from 44.4% in 1961 to 71.6% in 2023. In addition, the internal displacement movement resulting from civil conflicts and the activity of terrorist groups has increased the pressure on urban areas, as many residents have left their villages due to weak security control, preferring to reside in safer cities. Housing Crisis: Despite this large population increase, the increase in the number of housing units did not keep pace with this growth, as estimates indicate a deficit in housing units of up to 2 million housing units in 2016, with a clear absence of effective programs to meet this demand. Study objectives: - Highlighting the most important indicators of the housing deficit in the governorates of Iraq. - Reviewing the main factors that caused the housing crisis to worsen. - Providing comprehensive and implementable solutions to address this urgent problem. Study importance: It provides a comprehensive vision for decision-makers and specialists to understand the dimensions of the housing crisis in Iraq, and to find sustainable visions and solutions that serve Iraqi society and contribute to improving the housing situation of millions of Iraqi families.
A new and important study has been issued by the East Gate Center on thermal insulation in building and construction materials, entitled "The Importance of Thermal Insulation in Iraq". This study provides an in-depth analysis of how to improve energy efficiency in Iraqi buildings through thermal insulation, focusing on three main axes: reducing energy consumption, improving thermal comfort, and reducing carbon emissions. The study indicates that the use of insulation materials such as fiberglass and foam can significantly contribute to reducing cooling and heating costs, which enhances environmental sustainability. To achieve these goals, the study proposes the following recommendations: Promoting the use of effective insulation materials: Encouraging the use of highly efficient insulation materials such as fiberglass and mineral wool to improve the thermal performance of buildings. Improving building design: Adopting architectural designs that contribute to reducing heat loss, such as using double-glazed windows and natural ventilation. Community awareness: Spreading awareness about the benefits of thermal insulation and its importance in reducing energy consumption and preserving the environment. Supporting government policies: Developing government policies that support the use of thermal insulation in new buildings and providing incentives for existing buildings to adopt these solutions. Investing in Research and Development: Supporting research and development in the field of thermal insulation materials and technologies to improve their efficiency and reduce their cost. These recommendations aim to create a more efficient and sustainable residential environment in Iraq, which contributes to achieving economic savings and environmental protection.
